Article Body
Lone Star College System will host its first ever Black Male Student Summit Nov. 13.

“The event’s focus is to educate, empower and enrich student’s lives by offering a wealth of practical information through workshops, forums and the sharing of knowledge and ideas,” said Dr. Larry Rideaux, LSCS associate vice chancellor for student success.

African American male high school students in the LSCS service area have been invited through ISD counselors to attend the summit. The event will be hosted from 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. at Lone Star College-North Harris.

The summit will feature keynote presentations with speakers addressing topics and real solutions related to strengthening family, closing the achievement gap, developing and fostering positive relationships and staying on course with one's goals.  For more information regarding the Black Male Summit please visit http://lonestar.edu/blackmalesummit.

“The intent of the summit is to create an opportunity for students to connect with positive role models in an authentic learning environment,” said Rideaux.

LSCS is an affiliate of Achieving the Dream, a national initiative to help community college students succeed. The initiative is particularly concerned about student groups that traditionally have faced significant barriers to success including minority and low-income students. “Additionally the Black Male Summit helps support initiatives set by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to bring more African American males into the higher education arena,” said Rideaux.

Through THECB the African American Males Project was created to support recruitment and retention initiatives of African American males to attend college, identify and remove barriers that affect African American males attending college and address college readiness and preparation. The AAMP is composed of members representing multiple aspects of education including community and technical colleges, research universities, and public and private institutions.

Lone Star College System consists of five colleges, including LSC-CyFair, LSC-Kingwood, LSC-Montgomery, LSC-North Harris, and LSC-Tomball, six centers and Lone Star College-University Center. With more than 51,000 students in credit classes this fall, LSCS is the largest institution of higher education in the Houston area and third largest community college system in Texas.
